Healing Touch Therapy

What is Healing Touch?

Healing Touch is a relaxing nurturing energy therapy in which practitioners consciously use their hands in a heart-centered and intentional way to support and facilitate physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health. The practitioner and client come together energetically to facilitate the client’s health and healing.

Healing Touch is an energy therapy (biofield - the magnetic field around your body) that uses light gentle touch on or above the body to restore the body’s energy system. These non-invasive techniques utilize the hands to clear, energize, and balance the human and environmental energy fields placing the client in a position to self heal. It complements conventional health care and is used in collaboration with other approaches to improve health and facilitate healing.

It is recognized as a leader in its field for over 25 years. The Healing Touch educational program was developed by Janet Mentgen RN, BSN who combined her nursing background along with this new phenomenon to create this holistic format. The American Holistic Nurses Association and Healing Touch International endorse the healing Touch Educational program. The North American Nursing Diagnosis Association identifies an Energy Field Disturbance as a disruption in the flow of energy surrounding a person’s being which results in a disharmony of the mind, body & spirit. Research into the effects of Healing Touch on cancer, pain, and injury is being funded by the National Institutes of Health and the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine.

How does Healing Touch work?

Over the years, researchers have developed ways to measure the energy field. Theoretically, by correcting any defects in the energy field, energy healing may facilitate healing of the mind, body and spirit. Energy therapists focus on removing energy congestion that forms in our energy field (aura) and energy centers (chakras). Once these imbalances and disturbances are cleared, the energy channels resume their task of integrating the mind, body and spirit to restore health and/or promote healing. It may also help prevent further issues by restoring balance to energy field disturbances, which could later result in illness if left unbalanced.

Our energy field is considered to be the blueprint for our physical body. Just as a builder will look at architect blueprints to decide how to build a house, our physical body is constantly looking to the energy body to see how it will build and repair – because as you know – the cells of our body are constantly building and repairing. So if we can keep our blueprint nice and healthy – we can create the conditions for optimal health and well-being. With Healing Touch, we can clear things out of the energy field before they have a chance to manifest physically. All healing is self healing. So just like if you break a bone, a physician sets the bone for you, but the body itself actually heals the split; the doctor simply directs and facilitates the process. Healing Touch is a different and often complementary mode of facilitating the healing process, but functions from an energy perspective rather than a physical one.

How can Healing Touch benefit you?

Healing Touch research suggests many benefits and that individual experiences will vary. Some specific benefits of Healing Touch are it can accelerate wound healing, pain management, facilitates the relaxation response and facilitates healing, prevention of illness, reduction of anxiety and stress, aid in preparation for and follow-up after medical treatments and procedures, increased energy/relief for chronic fatigue. Support for the dying process and compliments traditional approaches to health and healing.

What can you expect from a Healing Touch session?

The client is fully clothed and can either sit up or lay on a padded massage table for the treatment. After a brief health history, the client’s energy system will be assessed. The Practitioner will discuss the assessment and ask permission to begin appropriate treatment and technique. The client normally experiences deep relaxation and is allowed to rest after the treatment. Appropriate recommendations and exercises may be given to empower the client to support their own health.
