CranioSacral Therapy

What is CranioSacral Therapy?

CranioSacral Therapy dates back to the 1970’s where physician John E Upledger first observed a rhythmic movement of the connective tissues surrounding the spinal cord during surgery on one of his patients. He went on to do in-depth research until 1985 where he established the Upledger Institute Clinic in Florida to teach the public and healthcare practitioners about the benefits of CranioSacral Therapy (CST).

The three layers of membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord (meninges) plus the volume of cerebralspinal fluid is what constitutes the CranioSacral system. The tissues extend through the bones of the skull, face, and mouth (the cranium) and then down to the tailbone (the sacrum). Not only do these structures function to protect the brain and spinal cord as a shock absorber, but they also serve to “move” other vital fluids and facilitate the electro-chemical conduction of nerve signals. As cerebral spinal fluid is produced within the brain itself it swells the cranium cavity. As the fluid is then reabsorbed after reaching a certain pressure gradient the head narrows. This cycle creates the craniosacral rhythm, which can easily be detected throughout the body as the fluid courses through its pathways.

Restrictions or imbalances within the membranes themselves can potentially cause any number of sensory, motor, neurological, or other health problems. This therapy is a gentle hands-on method of detection and correction of the tissues that encourages the body’s own natural healing mechanisms to dissipate negative effects of stress on the central nervous system.

How is CranioSacral Therapy performed?

A CranioSacral Therapist is trained to listen to the subtle rhythms and pulsations of the craniosacral system. This deep listening enables them to hear the expression of the body’s patterns of stress and resistance. Using a light touch, generally no more than the weight of a nickel, the practitioner monitors the flow of the rhythm to detect potential restrictions and imbalances in the CranioSacral system.

The therapist then uses gentle manual techniques to release those problem areas that surface, which in turn reduces undue pressure upon the brain and spinal cord. A CranioSacral session can last from about 30 minutes to more than one hour. The client lays on a padded massage table fully dressed in loose clothing while the therapist performs these techniques.

Individual experiences may vary from one time to the next. One time you might have increased awareness of body sensations and a sense of changes happening in the body, such as unusual tactile sensations, increased deep breathing, increased bowel sounds, increased urge to drink water, talk, or express feelings and sometimes you may go into a state of deep relaxation, or actually fall asleep.

What conditions does CranioSacral Therapy address?

By complementing the body’s natural healing process, CranioSacral Therapy is increasingly used as a preventative health measure for its ability to strengthen resistance to disease, and is effective for a wide range of medical problems associated with pain and dysfunction, including:

Migraine headaches
Chronic neck and back pain
Whiplash
Sprains
Strokes
Mood disorders
ADD, ADHD, learning disabilities
Chronic fatigue
Emotional difficulties
Post-surgical dysfunction
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
Temporomandibular Joint Syndrome (TMJ)
Any and all head injuries.

Chinese Acupressure Massage

What is Chinese Acupressure Massage?

“Amma” meaning push-pull, is the oldest Chinese word to describe massage. Amma Bodywork is based on the principles of Qi (pronounced chee) being a life force energy that flows through the body. Amma is a specialized form of bodywork therapy that combines deep, tissue manipulation with the application of pressure, friction and touch to specific points and the channels on which they are found. These channels are the pathways through which energy passes throughout the body.

Amma Therapy, like Acupuncture, focuses on the balance and movement of energy within the body. The techniques of Amma aim to remove blockages and free the flow of energy in the body. When this happens, the body is able to heal itself of illnesses, thereby restoring, promoting and maintaining optimum health.

How does Chinese Acupressure Massage work?

Amma Bodywork Therapy is rooted in Oriental Medical Principles. It focuses on the balance and movement of Qi within the body. The application of hand techniques is used to balance the flow of energy in the channels. Whereas the acupuncturist inserts needles into the energy pathways to stimulate and move the energy, the Amma practitioner relies primarily on the sensitivity and strength of the hands to manipulate the client’s life Qi.

Amma Bodywork Therapy addresses problems from a multi-system, multi-directional point of view. The process of assessment uses both Western and Eastern knowledge and techniques – combining traditional Oriental medical principals for assessing energy imbalances, with a Western approach to organ dysfunction. A diagnosis is based on the assessment of every facet of the mind/body complex – including observation of tongue (considered a road map of the body), taking various pulses, and evaluation of many signs and symptoms that reflect the state of internal organs.

What is a typical session in a Chinese Acupressure Massage treatment?

First, it is important to realize that Amma therapy is not just a massage treatment. Depending on the patient, Amma therapy may involve a variety of combined treatments including such things as vitamin recommendations, exercise suggestions, as well as holistic nutrition advice.

An Amma Therapy session usually lasts from 45 minutes to one hour. During this massage-type treatment, you can wear either loose clothing or undress to your comfort level and are treated on a padded massage table. Before treatment, your therapist will ask about your medical history, current complaints, symptoms, diet and exercise patterns. In assessment for treatment, the Amma Therapist will do more than just speak with you about your symptoms. Assessment will involve a variety of steps, including every aspect of the mind and body. This involves four major factors: looking, asking, touching and smelling. Practitioners of Amma Therapy believe that everything about the body can be learned by evaluating the body’s internal state.

An important part of the Amma process is patient education, regarding appropriate principles of diet and therapeutic exercises directed toward optimum health. Amma Therapy also stresses patient responsibility and cooperation in following through with the recommendations of the Amma Therapist. This is an essential component of a successful therapy.

What are the benefits of Chinese Acupressure Massage?

Amma Therapy is a powerful therapy for patients of all ages for both prevention and treatment of disease. It has been used to successfully treat and/or manage conditions including traumas, chronic disorders such as arthritis, hypertension, diabetes, gastrointestinal diseases, circulatory problems, anxiety, depression, gynecological problems, premenstrual problems, perimenopausal problems, menopausal considerations, autoimmune diseases, and neuromuscular disease. Anyone who is willing to commit to their own well-being can benefit tremendously from Amma.

Emotional Freedom Technique (Tapping)

What is the Emotional Freedom Technique?

Emotional Freedom Technique or EFT is a form of psychological acupressure, based on the same energy meridians used in traditional acupuncture to treat physical and emotional ailments for over five thousand years, but without the invasiveness of needles. Instead, simple tapping with the fingertips is used to input kinetic energy onto specific meridians on the head and chest while you think about your specific problem - whether it is a traumatic event, an addiction, pain, etc. -- and voice positive affirmations.

This combination of tapping the energy meridians and voicing positive affirmation works to clear the "short-circuit" - the emotional block - from your body's bioenergy system, thus restoring your mind and body's balance, which is essential for optimal health and the healing of physical disease.

How does EFT work?

EFT is a very effective yet gentle method of directly balancing the body's energy system for the feelings that you want to change. It's a bit like clearing a log that's blocking a stream where the log represents a stuck emotion in your stream of energy. You don't have to believe in the theory though, just as you don't need to know how a car works under the bonnet to drive one. Some people do like to find out more about the theory, while others are happy simply to have their problem resolved.

Using EFT involves "tuning into" the issue and then tapping with your fingers on specific acupressure points with your fingers. For example if you still carry anger towards someone who has hurt you in the past, you would be asked to think about them, and notice how you feel. But you do not have to relive past events. You just have to be aware that the negative feeling is there. Having therefore 'tuned in' to it, you are shown which acupressure points to tap, and what words to say as you do so. (Saying a few things also helps to disperse the emotion from the system).

Having done that you are then asked to think about the person or situation again and check how you feel. Typically you will notice a significant reduction in the intensity of the feeling. If it's not completely gone then the EFT practitioner repeats the process, bringing the intensity down each time until full balance is restored.

All this is done while sitting normally in a chair.

How can EFT help me?

EFT can help many different issues.

Some of these include fears and phobias, headaches, addictions, trauma, abuse (sexual, physical or mental), allergies, self-confidence/image, dyslexia and anger/stress.

Others that people have reported respond well to EFT are weight loss, arthritis, phantom pain, anxiety disorders and even warts.

Healing Touch

What is Healing Touch?

Healing Touch is a relaxing nurturing energy therapy in which practitioners consciously use their hands in a heart-centered and intentional way to support and facilitate physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health. The practitioner and client come together energetically to facilitate the client’s health and healing.

Healing Touch is an energy therapy (biofield - the magnetic field around your body) that uses light gentle touch on or above the body to restore the body’s energy system. These non-invasive techniques utilize the hands to clear, energize, and balance the human and environmental energy fields placing the client in a position to self heal. It complements conventional health care and is used in collaboration with other approaches to improve health and facilitate healing.

It is recognized as a leader in its field for over 25 years. The Healing Touch educational program was developed by Janet Mentgen RN, BSN who combined her nursing background along with this new phenomenon to create this holistic format. The American Holistic Nurses Association and Healing Touch International endorse the healing Touch Educational program. The North American Nursing Diagnosis Association identifies an Energy Field Disturbance as a disruption in the flow of energy surrounding a person’s being which results in a disharmony of the mind, body & spirit. Research into the effects of Healing Touch on cancer, pain, and injury is being funded by the National Institutes of Health and the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine.

How does Healing Touch work?

Over the years, researchers developed ways to measure the energy field. Theoretically, by correcting any defects in the energy field, energy healing may facilitate healing of the mind, body and spirit. Energy therapists focus on removing energy congestion that forms in our energy field (aura) and energy centers (chakras). Once these imbalances and disturbances are cleared, the energy channels resume their task of integrating the mind, body and spirit to restore health and/or promote healing. It may also help prevent further issues by restoring balance to energy field disturbances, which could later result in illness if left unbalanced.

Our energy field is considered to be the blueprint for our physical body. Just as a builder will look at architect blueprints to decide how to build a house, our physical body is constantly looking to the energy body to see how it will build and repair – because as you know – the cells of our body are constantly building and repairing. So if we can keep our blueprint nice and healthy – we can create the conditions for optimal health and well-being. With Healing Touch, we can clear things out of the energy field before they have a chance to manifest physically. All healing is self healing. So just like if you break a bone, a physician sets the bone for you, but the body itself actually heals the split; the doctor simply directs and facilitates the process. Healing Touch is a different and often complementary mode of facilitating the healing process, but functions from an energy perspective rather than a physical one.

How can Healing Touch benefit you?

Healing Touch research suggests many benefits and that individual experiences will vary. Some specific benefits of Healing Touch are it can accelerate wound healing, pain management, facilitates the relaxation response and facilitates healing, prevention of illness, reduction of anxiety and stress, aid in preparation for and follow-up after medical treatments and procedures, increased energy/relief for chronic fatigue. Support for the dying process and compliments traditional approaches to health and healing.

What can you expect from a Healing Touch session?

The client is fully clothed and can either sit up or lay on a padded massage table for the treatment. After a brief health history, the client’s energy system will be assessed. The Practitioner will discuss the assessment and ask permission to begin appropriate treatment and technique. The client normally experiences deep relaxation and is allowed to rest after the treatment. Appropriate recommendations and exercises may be given to empower the client to support their own health.
